The Fürstlich Castell’sche Domänenamt is one of the oldest wineries in Germany, with seven single vineyards being the heart of the 70 ha. All vineyards are located within close proximity to Castell and are influenced by the continental climate, the Keuper Soil of Franconia (sediments of an European Ocean from 250 million years ago) and their position on the slopes of the Steigerwald forest.

Records from as early as 1266 and a map of 1479 document the vineyards Hohnart, Schlossberg, Reitsteig and Trautberg.

The Silvaner, first planted in Castell in 1695, is our major wine variety with almost 40% of all wines produced. The vine is now perfectly ‘at home’ in Franconia and is an important part of our identity. We also produce Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir among other grape varieties.
