Bausch
The name stands for ‘crooked’ and ‘crouching’ and describes the vineyard’s location at the slopes of the Steigerwald. Already in 1689 it was recorded that “a lot of good graftings” were planted on the vineyard – grape varieties that have virtually vanished into oblivion – Gutedel, Süßchwarz and the rough white Elbling.
The vineyard is located on the east side of the village of Castell protected from the winds by the Schlossberg. It gets the early morning sun and warms early during the day. Its advantageous and not too hot microclimate ensures continued and harmonious growth, encouraging fresh and juicy fruit characters and a lively acidity in the wines.
The extraordinary character of the Bausch wines, however, largely result from their strong and distinguishing structure developed from the deep soil, which is rich in Keuper Soil. The Müller-Thurgau wines’ potential for aging remains evident until today in the wines of 1971 and 1976.
